Description

A healthier twist on the classic blooming onion, air-fried to crispy perfection with minimal oil.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 small onions (golf ball-sized)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs (or flaxseed meal with water for vegan option)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • Cooking spray (olive oil or avocado oil)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: Peel and trim tops and bottoms, cutting a star pattern at the top.
  2. Soak the onions in cold water for at least 15 minutes.
  3. Prepare the breading station with separate bowls for flour mixture, eggs, and breadcrumbs.
  4. Coat the onions: Dredge in the flour mixture, dip in egg, and coat with breadcrumbs.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) for about 5 minutes.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket and arrange the onions in a single layer.
  7. Spray the onions lightly with oil and air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  8. Remove and serve hot.

Notes

Avoid overcrowding the air fryer for even cooking. Store leftover onions in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
