A healthier twist on the classic blooming onion, air-fried to crispy perfection with minimal oil.
Ingredients

- 4 small onions (golf ball-sized)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 2 eggs (or flaxseed meal with water for vegan option)
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Cooking spray (olive oil or avocado oil)
Instructions
- Prepare the onions: Peel and trim tops and bottoms, cutting a star pattern at the top.
- Soak the onions in cold water for at least 15 minutes.
- Prepare the breading station with separate bowls for flour mixture, eggs, and breadcrumbs.
- Coat the onions: Dredge in the flour mixture, dip in egg, and coat with breadcrumbs.
- Preheat the air fryer to 370°F (188°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket and arrange the onions in a single layer.
- Spray the onions lightly with oil and air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Remove and serve hot.
Notes
Avoid overcrowding the air fryer for even cooking. Store leftover onions in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
