- 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
- Food coloring (red and white)
- 1/2 cup butter (softened)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
- 1 teaspoon flavoring extract (e.g., vanilla or peppermint)
Instructions
- Sift together almond flour and confectioners’ sugar.
- Whip egg whites until frothy, then gradually add granulated sugar until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold the almond flour mixture into the whipped egg whites.
- Divide batter for coloring and mix in food coloring.
- Pipe small circles onto parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Let sit at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 15-18 minutes.
- Cool completely on baking sheet, then transfer to wire rack.
- Make the filling by creaming together butter and powdered sugar, then add flavoring.
- Assemble by pairing shells and adding filling.
Notes
Allow assembled macarons to mature in the fridge for at least 24 hours for the best flavor.
